The Cows Are Back on Pasture
Yesterday was one of our favorite days of the year — the cows are finally back out on pasture.
This is one of the earliest springs we’ve been able to turn them out, and we’re especially thankful for that. Even though it’s been a little cool lately, the grass has been growing beautifully and the cows were more than ready to get at it again.
For the next week or so, we’ll ease them into it with half days on pasture while their rumens adjust to fresh spring grass. After that, they’ll be out full time as long as the grass keeps growing well. Right now it’s dry and there’s not much rain in the forecast, so we’re praying hard for continued moisture and NO drought this year.
As the cows transition onto fresh grass, you may notice a couple seasonal changes in the milk and cream.
The cream will take on a slightly more golden color. That comes from natural pigments called carotenoids found in fresh green grass. These are the same nutrients that make butter from grass-fed cows look richer in color.
Some people also notice the flavor becomes a little fresher or sweeter during grazing season. It’s not a drastic change, just one of those natural seasonal differences that comes with cows eating what they were designed to eat.
One of the things we love most about small dairy farming is that the milk reflects the seasons, the weather, and the pasture. It’s living food from real animals on real grass — and every spring feels like a fresh beginning.
We’re excited for another grazing season and thankful you’re along with us for it!
