Where to Start With Whole Grains
If you’ve been thinking about joining our organic grain order but feel a little unsure where to start, you’re not alone.
Most people hear “whole grain” and picture something heavy… dry… maybe a little intimidating to actually use.
But it doesn’t have to be that way.
You don’t need a grain mill. You don’t need to change everything about how you cook. You just need a good place to begin.
Here’s what I recommend for your first order.
🥞 Start with something easy (and family-approved)
If you try nothing else, start here:
Organic Harvest (5-Grain) Pancake Mix
This is one of the biggest surprises for people.
These pancakes are:
Light
Fluffy
Full of flavor
Not dense and hard. Just good, simple food. Make sure you slather on the raw butter and top with some pure Maple Syrup.
If you’ve got kids, this is an easy win. And if the kids like it, everything else feels a little less intimidating.
🍞 Add a dependable bread option
Next, I’d suggest:
Organic Whole Wheat Bread Mix
This is not the kind of whole wheat bread that would also double as a brick on that patio you’ve been thinking about adding.
It’s:
Soft
Sliceable
Actually enjoyable
You can use it in a bread machine or make it by hand or in the Kitchen Aid mixer, and it turns out consistently.
If you’ve ever wanted to make your own bread but felt unsure, this is a really good place to start.
I keep a few 1-pound bags of this in my freezer so if my regular bread routine falls apart, I have a whole grain backup that’s just dump and go - that even my kids can make for me.
🌾 Try a small bag of flour
If you’re ready to go a step further, add:
A smaller bag of whole wheat flour
You can start by swapping it into things you already make:
Muffins
Banana bread
Pancakes or waffles
You don’t have to go all in. Even replacing 1/4 of your flour is a good start. Once you have a good handle on that, increase to 1/2. It doesn’t have to be all or none.
☕ Optional: something simple like oatmeal
If your family eats oatmeal or you make your own granola, this is another easy add.
It’s one of those quiet staples that just tastes better when it’s fresh and well sourced.
💛 You don’t have to do everything at once
This isn’t about changing your whole kitchen overnight.
It’s about:
Trying one or two things
Finding what your family actually enjoys
Building from there over time
Some families stick with pancake mix and bread mix for a long time—and that’s perfectly fine.
🚜 How the order works
We place a group order about every 3 months from Whole Grain Milling.
You place your order through the form
I combine everything into one order
It’s delivered here on a pallet
You pick it up with your milk (or arrange pickup if you’re not a milk customer)
Simple and practical.
🌾 Final encouragement
If you’ve been on the fence, don’t overthink it.
Start with the pancake mix.
Add a bread mix.
See how it goes in your own kitchen.
Good food doesn’t have to be complicated.
It just has to be something your family will eat—and come back for.
